Lake Shoes

It’s surprising how little consideration and thought are given to feet until we have a problem with them.

Lake ShoesOne of the things I do early in the bike fitting process is have a good look at the cyclists’ current shoes and how they’re set up. Having seen hundreds of cyclists that have come into the bike fit studio It’s never a surprise, or rarity to see ill-fitting shoes.

It is common to find shoes that are too long and to find shoes that are too narrow. A good test is to remove the insole from your current shoe and look for any signs of wear, rubbing or high-pressure indentations at the toe position. Also try standing on the current insole and noting whether your foot overhangs the side of the insole or whether there is a large gap from your toe to the front of the insole. Both can indicate the wrong size shoe. The wrong size shoe can also lead to poor placement of cleats causing additional problems.

Typical complaints in terms of foot comfort that cyclist experience can be hotspots on the forefoot, or pins and needles, tingling, numbness, around the toes or cold feet even during warmer temperatures and weather. Some cyclists can suffer from cramping, trigger toe and other conditions. Whilst some of the above can be caused by incorrect cleat positioning, a lot come down to shoe and insole choice.

Poorly Fitting Shoes

Due to the number of cyclists that I see with poorly fitting shoes that can lead to a poor bike fit, I decided to stock Lake shoes. Lake shoes are a very popular brand amongst bike fitters and for good reason. They have a large range of shoes, to suit different budgets, different riding styles, and more importantly different feet requirements. Lake provides shoes for road cycling, gravel cycling and mountain biking. This means they have shoes in their range that are suitable for two bolt or three bolt cleat fixings. They also have shoes suitable for warm summer weather or cold, wet, winter weather. It should also be noted that for competitive cyclists ill fitting shoes lead to performance losses too. Lake Cycling shoes are brand leading when it comes to carbon soles. Comfort, fit and performance all go hand in hand.

For cyclists that may have feet with different lengths it is also possible to order Lake shoes with different left and right sizes. Finally for the rider who has everything Lake even offer custom shoe options where it is possible to choose the colour and design and have a unique bespoke shoe design just for you.

I recommend if you are considering new shoes or think that your current shoes may not be a good fit and you are about to book a bike fit, that you make an appointment to come before the day of the bike fit, bringing your current shoes if applicable, and we can measure your feet to make sure that we have the right pair of shoes in stock for you on the day of your bike fit. Whilst it is obviously possible to purchase new shoes after a bike fit, the bike fit position, particularly saddle height, is affected by the shoe choice and cleat position. Therefore, it is easier to get set up in advance so that the fit can progress smoothly, and the results be more effective.
